painted terrain

here is what i have so far. and i'm sure i will keep tweaking it between now and saturday. it is uploaded into the shared file if anyone else wants to have a crack at it. i'm really happy with the shape. the paint job is a different story. i used Ben's flat map of the island to draw it up but i'm still concerned that the fortresses aren't going to fit.

inn for group project

ok, well it's 3:30 am and although I am not thrilled with the materials, at least I have the shape for the most part. I figure we can match materials better when in class.

what i've got so far

here is my inn so far. 840 poly count. if it had an interior, it could have 8 rooms on the second floor that are 4x5 meters. Japanese rooms are built according to how many tatami mats each room has (most Japanese rooms, anyway) and standard Japanese rooms vary between 3x4 to 4x5 meters. The first floor could accommodate a modest front desk, office, and stairway to the second floor, leaving the floor plan very open and airy. And of course, the cut out on the first floor could have a little bar and some sitting areas or something. The four short posts are where the dock will connect to it.

dock revised

I'm about halfway done with the inn. I'm going to attach the inn to the dock...or at least, eventually it will need to be connected to something. Was seriously unsatisfied with my original dock AND it had a really high polygon count. So, I reworked the dock real quick just to get that out of the way. (Also zipped it to the shared class file and added a few more materials.) The water plane was used for the render pics only to define about where the floaters would hit the water. I deleted it once I saved a few pics.

group project

So, I wasn't in class last week and that was clearly a mistake. My prop is a dock? I'm not real sure what I was supposed to do. So i made segments that could be cloned and linked together. They are 8'x10' each. The awning is 7' high and possibly unnecessary. I was trying to give it an Asian feel. I tried to keep the poly count low. Each segment is around 5000 polygons. I'm assuming this isn't good since the bar was in the red. ??? But the less they have, the worse they start to look. The awning looked awesome when it was smoother. Oh well. I also made a helipad. I sketched out the description of the project I saw when I read it and just kind of went from there. I would have liked to do more but I need to know more about the project first. I also didn't put any texture to it because I figured that's what the materials bank is for?

this one has a higher poly count but i like it more. boo.

blankenship project

Last week, our sub gave us a project to work on. Box modeling. We were given the task of building the Griffith Observatory in LA from the floor plans up. Most of what I did was completed in class. And while he did teach us a few things, I still felt really limited once I got home. I had a good front image of the building but couldn't find many detailed pics of the sides or the back. So I didn't really know where to take it past the front. However, it was fun. I started working on building our first apartment the other day. I also have been contemplating a few drafting classes.

compound objects

My daughter is starting to really enjoy Dr. Suess. And i love reading him to her. Originally I saw a more feathery, Suess-esque style of tree but using the blobmesh made it look more like expanding foam insulation. But i like it. I had to turn it off in the view port to speed things along so i just kind of had to feel it out. I created a terrain for the plateau and then a mesh smooth over it. I would have liked it even smoother but got impatient. The space warp for the road was the most frustrating. At one point i had to just forfeit all of my progress from my last save point because i guess i applied too many of something ??? i had a weird grid on my screen behind my scene that would cut into it when i panned around it. i have no idea what i did. lol. But it finally worked to much rejoice and i'm fairly happy with it. I also used pro boolean to attach the roots to the tree, which was lofted, and i added some volume fog.

lathe and loft

so, i started this assignment last week as soon as i got home from class. i had this fantastic image in my head that was very industrial and apocalyptic ect. i worked on it all week before finally coming to the realization that i was taking on way more than i am capable of at this stage. needless to say, it didn't work out and i scrapped it yesterday. keep it simple, stupid. i created these ufo's over the past two days using the lathe and loft techniques.

for this one, i lofted the main body (and added a bevel), fins, ray gun wires and the laser beams. i also added two shapes to the lofted beams. i lathed the ray gun. and even though i think i like the little blue ufo better, i definitely had more fun with this one.

with a different beam that i decided against:

i made this little guy with my robot from assignment 1 in mind. i lathed the body and the little cap on top and then added a torus and an array of lights around it.

i didn't put much into the nazca ufo. i lathed four layers of objects for the body and then lofted the piping along the edge of the shield.
